Your first day on the ward. Or your five hundredth. Either way, you want to be well prepared. Because in healthcare, improvising sounds great in theory — but in practice, you just want your essentials close at hand.
This checklist is based on what nurses and care students need every day: compact, practical, and without unnecessary clutter.
1. Notes and documentation
Things move fast on the floor. Patient data, medication times, handover notes — you need to jot things down quickly without running to a computer every time.
- A small notebook or pocket card that fits in your breast pocket and is always within reach. Many nurses use a fixed pocket card with normal values and medication references, with space for personal notes. het Handig Boekje is a great example.
- A reliable pen that always works and won't leak in your pocket. Bring two.
2. Medical tools
Depending on your ward, the essentials vary, but some tools are nearly universal:
- Scissors for bandages, plasters, or opening packaging
- Ampoule opener if you regularly work with glass ampoules. Prevents cuts and makes opening much safer. Small, light, and easy to carry.
- Watch with a second hand or a clip-on watch for measuring pulse and respiration
3. Hygiene and personal protection
- Hand sanitiser in a small bottle for personal use, alongside the dispensers on the ward
- Hair tie or hair clip if you have long hair
- A spare set of clothes or extra socks — you never know
4. Personal comfort
An 8- or 12-hour shift also calls for some self-care:
- Enough water. Many wards offer little chance to drink in peace, so a bottle in your locker is a must.
- A snack for your break — something you can eat quickly
- Earplugs or music for the ride home. Decompressing after a tough shift is a skill in itself.
5. For care students: extra points of attention
As a student, you often carry a bit more than an experienced colleague:
- Internship logbook or portfolio, depending on your programme
- Reference material such as normal values, medication calculations, and anatomical overviews. A compact pocket card saves a lot of searching during busy moments. Take a look at het Handig Boekje if you don't have one yet.
- Your schedule and supervisor contact details, available offline too
In closing
What's in your bag says something about how you work. Not overloaded, but not underprepared either. It's about having the right things at the right moment — so you can focus on what truly matters: the care of your patients.

And the bag itself?
All those things need somewhere to go. Not every bag is up to the task, a care shift demands more than a regular school bag can handle.
Our Bag was designed with exactly that in mind. It's made from splash-resistant fabric, which is practical in an environment where liquids are simply part of the job. Inside, multiple compartments keep your belongings organised so you can find what you need quickly. There's a dedicated compartment for your water bottle and snacks, and the bag offers three carrying options so you can adapt it to how your day looks. The shoulder straps are specially designed to reduce strain on your back and shoulders, which makes a real difference after a long shift.
Compact enough for a shift, spacious enough for everything you need.
